TOEFL iBT Writing : Independent Essay

Question: "The measure of your success is how much money you make." Do you agree or disagree with this statement? If you disagree, is there another way to define success? If you agree, why is money the best way to define sucess? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

People generally relate success to how much money they make. People who believe this to be true might argue that this is because everything in this world revolves around money. However, in my opinion, there's so much more to success rather than just money. I would define success as how close a person is from achieving his or her goal and how satisfied that person is with his or her life.

To begin with, money is not everything in life and there are things that people can't buy with money. It might seem true that wealth can bring one a step closer to achieving one's dream, but when that's the case, people would not acknowledge that kind of success. For example, suppose there were two men sharing the same goal of becoming a famous musician. One of them was raised in a wealthy environment, while the other was not as fortunate. The former one fulfilled his dream one day by hiring a world-class producer and engineer with his money. Simply put, he bought his own success. On the other hand, the second man had been practicing for days and nights. Then one day, he finally got accepted in one of the most respected chamber music organizations in the world. Of these two men, I would definitely choose the latter circumstance as a success for this man fulfilled his goal from his own hard efforts. Thus, success bought with money will not be acknowledged.

Furthermore, I also believe that the true measure of success is how satisfied and happy the person is. Money can't buy happiness and peace. It only brings vain. Think of the character Jay Gatsby from the book "The Great Gatsby." He was a very rich man and people looked up upon him. However, in the end, money couldn't gratify him so he committed suicide. In the future, I wouldn't mind not making so much money as long as I can continue doing what I enjoy most with a happy family by my side. To me, this is what comes in my mind when I think of the word "success."

In conclusion, I disagree with the statement that being successful means the same thing as earning lots of money. This is because I believe success is rather how close one is from fulfilling his or her dream. Most importantly, money can't buy happiness. For these aforementioned reasons, success can't be measured with money.

Thanks for liking it, Eden. I don't know much about life but this is one of the things I've learned while becoming an adult. Your dad speaks the truth. Our lives become much more meaningful if we share ourselves to others.

You're quite lucky having him to give you sound advices.

Keeping Right

Have you ever experienced walking on the right side of a sidewalk when suddenly a rushing Korean run into your direction, literally? If you won't give way, you'll just hear that someone muttering something under his breath. Or have you ever had these cases like you were doing " patintero "(pah-tin-teh-roh) with the other person when you are walking? I find this behavior very bothering (sometimes odd and funny) especially when I use the stairways in the subway. Some subway stations have escalors going up installed at the left (e.g. Deokcheon Station). What is surprising is that they even have this sign: I told this to Tommy a few days ago and I just found out from him that they learn walking at the left side of the road in their elementary days. They even have this song that goes lilke this: "People keep to the left and cars to the right. Let's cross the street after looking right and left." So, it must be because of an old convention of walking on the le...

Samsung's AMOLED

Yup. I have a new phone and this is because of Chloe. She knocked out my phone so hard on the bathroom floor that made the monitor useless for two whole days! I went to a near Anycall service center and actually planned to repair it but they said that I had to pay for around 25,000won for a part replacement, I just thought of buying a new one since there are a lot of free phones nowadays and I had used my phone for more than two years. To pay 25k for an old, really full of scratches phone (because of Chloe) is too much for me since sooner or later I also need to replace it. In the end, it turned out not to be a free phone(850,000 won / $690). Tommy bought this phone for me saying that I need a "much, much better phone" because of his daughter...hahaha! and because I've been always using free phones since I came here in Korea (which are NOT really FREE PHONES because of the additional services included in the phone bill for the first few months). So, I resulted picking thi...
