TOEFL iBT Writing : Independent Essay

Question : "The measure of your success is how much money you make." Do you agree or disagree with this statement? If you disagree, is there another way to define success? If you agree, why is money the best way to define sucess? Give specific reasons and examples to support your answer.      People generally relate success to how much money they make. People who believe this to be true might argue that this is because everything in this world revolves around money. However, in my opinion, there's so much more to success rather than just money. I would define success as how close a person is from achieving his or her goal and how satisfied that person is with his or her life.      To begin with, money is not everything in life and there are things that people can't buy with money. It might seem true that wealth can bring one a step closer to achieving one's dream, but when that's the case...

Cooking 101- Lotus Roots Boiled in Soy Sauce

Tommy knew, even before we got married, that cooking wasn't my cup of tea. We even came to an agreement that I'd just be serving him kimchi everyday which made him reconsider his proposal for marriage...LOL. I actually never went out of my cooking comfort zone (frying -- which I found to be the best skill I have so far next to slicing ripe mangoes) not after I came to Korea.      So before you make a grave mistake of doing this recipe, I'm suggesting you to think twice before you seriously do it.      The recipe is quite easy for a trying hard cook like me. Here it is: Lotus Roots Boiled in Soy Sauce ( 연근조림 - Chloe's Favorite) Ingredients: 450g of Lotus Roots 1 spoon of Vinegar (I use Apple Vinegar) For the Sauce (Mix them together in a bowl then set aside) 1 1/2 cup of water 1/2 cup of soy sauce ( I use the Korean brands, or Kikoman will also do) 3...

The Grand Palace on Korean Thanksgiving Day

Lightnings flashed and thunder filled the whole sky. The monks in a northern Thailand province were bewildered to find one of their monuments struck by the lighning. Looking closely to this chedi, they discovered  a Buddha statue covered with plaster inside it. The monks took the statue quickly and brought it to the abbot's  residence where it was safely kept.      Days after the incident, the abbot suddenly espied that the stucco on the Buddha's nose had flaked off. He took a good look at it and saw a green image beneath. He removed carefully all the stucco that covered it --- He was stunned to see that the Buddha statue was green!  The Emerald Buddha      In 2006 when Tommy and I had our second honeymoon trip in Thailand. We booked our trip with an agency and had a ...

2011 Korean Thanksgiving Holiday - Part One

Our princess Chloe on the porch of a beautiful house inside the Summer Palace      A 5-day holiday away from Korea without school work and stock would be a perfect family day.      So, the family has decided to go for a short-fun trip nearby Bangkok to experience being in a foreign land. It might be absurd to write the phrase foreign land but you must understand that I've been living in Bangkok for 9 months but where I am is no different from my Korean life-- I speak in Korean and English, I deal with Koreans, I dine in Korean restaurants and make Korean food at home. See? Hua Lamphong Train Station     We basically planned of going to  Kanchanaburi  to visit some poignant WWII landmarks in history-- the Bridge over River Kwai and the Death Railway. I, in particular, was excited to see them since I've read quite a few articles about the place and felt  mournful for ...

Writing Anew

I thought for a long time on how I could force myself to write here in this blog since I found it hard to put down the right words to describe what I’ve been feeling lately. I struggled to keep my hands into the keyboard and waited for those “ideas” to flow…naturally. I really tried. I tried so hard to write that all topics turned up to be stilted and very flat. I could have published an entry everyday (really) but it wouldn’t reflect a single “me”. It would have maintained my place in blogging but would have been utterly gibberish and ineffectual, too. I in my worst hair day      So instead of forcing myself to write about “anything” and waiting those creative juices to flow once more into me, I resolve to write again to remind myself of the wonderful things that are happening in my daily life. When life gets tougher and tougher, I would be looking back in this blog and savor the feelings these experiences once hold....

One Part of Me

I am a pessimist: my characteristics include whatever that term may entail. Despite its dour nature, pessimism definitely has its perks, such as fending off disappointments. I do not expect much of any event that may cross my path; by doing so, my expectations are easily satiated, in turn bringing me vast pleasure. My pessimism allows me to live a more pleasing life than if I was to possess any amount of optimism. My negative attitude places my mind in a rational frame of thought, allowing me to prepare for the worst situation and to surmount such difficulties with the greatest efficiency possible.
